A bit more history to add, according to the "Argus" (NLA NEWSPAPER. beta) June 14 1913, John Frank COX described as a "finacier & property agent" applies for a hotel licence with his mate Dr. Leslie James LAMROCK...both are developers of the O'Brien Estate. In 1914 they apply to council to develop a road "Blake Str." to gain access to "Bondi Estate"...... In 1917 Friday 5 Jan both are before the beak, Dr.L.J.Lamrock (ex Mayor of Waverley) & J.F Cox (alderman) are accused ...Of Promoting interest outside of contracts....they plead guilty and are fined 55 pounds each. Cox Ave crops up again in 1952, when a Miss Savage kills her "idiot" niece (of 3 days), claiming to do her sister "a service"...she is found not guilty of murder. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The name Bennett crops up as a interested party, I think he was one of the builders of the original developments....there used to be a Mrs Bennett ( grand daughter?) she used to live at Emma's/Andrew's place, Mrs Weston (ex 4 Cox Ave.) once told us of a family that lived at 2 Cox during the war...a pair of wild girls who used to put their mum in the air raid shelter while they entertained US service men. The mandarine tree outside of 4 Cox Ave is from Mrs Westons husband, injured in WW2, spitting seeds out while sitting in his wheel chair. In the 20's/30's there used to be a huge fig tree between Hall and Cox which everyone used to pluck, when the fruit was in season.....ref Weston There was a "Georgia Peach" tree (Weston) ,since cut down, at the back of Sabbabs, courtesy of the entertained service men. |
